Tooth decay occurs when the tooth structure has been de-mineralized and weakened by the interaction of bacteria, plaque, food deposits, and acids. We treat this condition by removing the diseased area and filling the remaining space with a dental filling material. We offer both white fillings (composite resins) and silver fillings (amalgam); the choice is yours.
Composite resin is a tooth-colored mixture of plastic and glass. The material is placed in several layers using a curing light to harden each layer. This option has high esthetic appeal and bonds well to the tooth. However, it costs more than silver amalgam, takes longer to place, can wear out sooner, and may cause some post operative sensitivity.
Amalgam is made from a mixture of silver, copper, tin, and mercury. This type of filling costs less, lasts longer, and causes patients less post operative sensitivity. On the other hand, its silver color has lower esthetic appeal, and the presence of mercury poses problems for patients who are sensitive to this metal.
We can remove decay and prepare cavities for treatment, in many cases, by using little or no needle anesthesia. Waterlase is an instrument that enables us to use a combination of laser energy and water to cut and remove decay. This service is popular with our patients because it enables them to avoid the discomfort of heat, vibration, or pressure associated with the traditional handpiece (drill) and the discomfort of needle anesthesia.
